Indigenous Tours WA is the original Aboriginal cultural tour and education business in Western Australia — founded by Wadjuk Nyoongar man Greg Nannup, son of respected Elder and cultural pioneer Dr Noel Nannup OAM.
Indigenous Tours WA was created as a trading name for The Nannup Family Trust, an enterprise established in 2004 for the benefit of Indigenous Culture and Heritage. The Nannup family possess a connection to Wadjuk Country dating back thousands of years and has a passion for sharing and promoting Indigenous heritage and keeping our culture alive in the Perth Metropolitan area.
There are approximately 250
different Aboriginal language groups across Australia with an excess of 700
different dialects. The Nyoongar people live in the South West of Western
Australia, from just south of Geraldton in the north, to Merredin in the east
and Esperance in the south. The Nyoongar people consist of 14 tribal groups all
sharing one language, however each having their own dialect.
Perth’s original people, the Wadjuk, lived within an approximate 50km radius of Kings Park. Wadjuk means “The guardians of the link between the land and the sea” — this link being the beautiful Swan River. Once a year the Wadjuk would travel along the waterway we know as Derbal Yarrigan (Swan River) and meet at Walyalup (Fremantle) to celebrate the Country and waterway they cared for. The Wadjuk had plenty of bush tucker to eat, many stories to tell and a Dreaming that still continues today.
Our family has been sharing
Wadjuk Nyoongar culture with Western Australians for over two decades. Dr Noel
Nannup — one of Australia’s first Aboriginal park rangers, NAIDOC Male Elder of
the Year, Honorary Doctorate recipient from Murdoch University and Elder in
Residence at Edith Cowan University — spent decades building the foundation of
Aboriginal cultural tourism in this State. Through Indigenous Tours WA, he
established the Kings Park cultural tour in 2004, cultural tours across
significant Noongar sites in the Perth region, and the Swan River tour in 2009
— sharing the ancient stories of this Country with Western Australians at a
time when few others were doing so.
Greg Nannup has walked
alongside his father every step of that journey, delivering cultural
experiences across Kings Park, Fremantle, the Swan River and beyond, and
carrying that knowledge forward into the next generation.
Today, Indigenous Tours WA
offers school incursions, excursions at Point Walter on the Swan River, and
Journey on Country experiences at Yarragin Rock — our private Aboriginal
retreat on Noongar Country in the WA wheatbelt. All programs are hands-on, curriculum-aligned
and delivered by Wadjuk Nyoongar people with a living connection to this
Country and its stories.
This is not a program designed
by a government body or a tourism council. This is culture shared by the family
that built the industry — directly, authentically and with deep respect for
what Country has always taught us.
Join us and take a journey of discovery into the lives of the First Australians. The knowledge has always been here.
